Like others, it started with a pack of two-person teams that is gradually whittled down through a series of globe-trotting challenges. During Sunday night's episode, only a few seconds elapsed between the time Hanoi was announced as the setting and the time a commenter on Twitter wondered whether Jane Fonda would be featured.
Note: The entire episode can be seen online at www. Several aspects of the episode bothered some of the viewers chiming on Twitter. For some, the very location was a problem. In order to get a clue, the competitors had to sit through a rather corny musical skit celebrating the glories of communism. What those guys faced coming home was a crime in itself. Those who spit on them as they got off of planes should be ashamed and that behavior was as bad as anything the politicians did to muck up the war.
Some of the Vietnam vets remind me of the old saying "I once cried because I had no shoes Why is everyone up in arms all of a sudden about the Amanzing Race showing that photoage and getting all offended. Remember how the American people treated the Virtnam Vets when the returned home, like garbage. That to me is more cold hearted than showing a photoage.
I don't even live in you countryand I now that much. I really don't think this is anything that needs to be apologized for. We went into a country in which we had no business being to fight a McCarthy Era cold-war and an overwhelming number of people lost their lives. There is nothing wrong with showing our country that other countries have other views of us, and really should be encouraged.
Americans need to understand history from a non American-based perspective to get the whole story. Meg, crews died in those Bs and people died on the ground from them, it was wrong to trivialize those events for a TV show. Do you really believe that because the war was a mistake that the servicemembers who died there should be treated with such disrespect? Come'on people its in poor taste yes but there are way worse things on television. Cant we set some priorities. Amazing Race is one of my favorite programs.
That said, it makes me sad that our next generation, who likely produced this episode, either are ignorant of our country's history or care so little about the lives lost in Vietnam that they would make the "monument" a destination. If this "monument" is truly the resting place of the bomber, it is also the resting place of its crew members.
While Vietnam is now a vacation destination, it is also the land where thousands of our young men selflessly gave their lives. Wake up producers and learn a history lesson. I quite literally lived next to this monument for more than a year, so let me offer a unique perpective. First, this is not an entire plane; this is a section of a wing, and a wheel, so there are no servicemen still buried with the plane.
With that said, the Vietnamese also did a full excavation of the site in the 70's. Huu Tiep Ho, as its traditionally named is far from a destination, and is apart of everyday life.
If you want to be offended, you should wonder about the govt cutting funding for recovering bodies, rather than something that reminds you of a lost war. Grow up and move on- the rest of the world has.
As far as the "propoganda" song goes, these songs play everyday, and are about how great Vietnam is, but that is far better than watching Fox News all day. Most Americans can't even speak proper English yet alone Vietnamese to even know it was a communist propaganda song. I've watched and enjoyed every episode except this one—the worst by far.
I had many high school friends who were killed or injured in Vietnam. Surely young people now can identify with a war where the justification for the war is questioned as was this one. To say "get over it" is truly insensitive and cruel to veterans and their families. Get over it! American atrocities all over the world but those aren't treated as points of how dare anyone visit or show me.
It is funny how they are fast to argue with people that have a different opinion of theirs, yet want to force their opinion on you. Was CBS wrong — yes, but they apologized and it is a done deal. In reality, Viet Nam is a forgotten war, sadly. If you ask any graduating High School student what happened in Viet Nam, the odds are they will have no clue. I took a class back in 's at a Community College in which I was the oldest in the class early 30s and the rest were late teens early 20s.
Ho Chi Min was part of the studies — No one knew who he was, they had no clue who Westmoreland was, and when the Professor and I talked about them — they had NO idea where Viet Nam was and the fact that the USA was involved in a war there.
So before you say we have no right being someplace, read the real history books before you spew mis-information. This show is wonderfully educational in a country, ours, that knows almost nothing about the majority of the world. Some contestants really paid tribute at that moment. The song was an inside look at another country's propaganda, and I found it interesting.
The downed plane is part of Hanoi's history, and ours, painful as that is. And everyone is forgetting one of the early seasons of this series. It went through Viet Nam as well. One of the contestants had not been to Viet Nam since serving in the war. We got a chance to see the country and the war through his eyes, and it was moving. But yes, let's never pay attention when they do something right.
Let's only bully and bluster when they do something wrong. That makes perfect sense. I really did not have an issue with the show — was not overly fond of the translation of the song, but actually watched it twice to catch all of the translation. I do remember seeing the previous time when they were in Viet Nam with the Vet, and it was very touching.
IMHO — They offended some, and those that were offended spoke their mind which contrary to a lot of people's belief is their Right under the First Amendment , CBS acknowledged it and thought enough about it to issue an apology which is also their right by the First Amendment.
As a Viet Nam vet. PS The first one is Jane Fonda. Yeah, they should've featured those GI's walking around with Vietcong ear necklaces or brought up them shooting down children instead. Thank you!! I lost family member in Viet Nam, they disgrased what could have been an opportunity to lean. Being station with folks that fought in Viet Nam this is just a slap in the face. How many of these "Innacent" ppl and children killed our guys? The ear necklaces are all Hollywood and I'm sure children were killed because the NVC used them as shields and bomb carriers.
Ear neck less a Hollywood stunt!!! I watched that episode and it never crossed my mind that it could be offensive. I was interested in the memorial and never even noticed the song. I love the show and I don't think they have anything to apologize for. I really thought that the segment with the song was inappropriate, and I turned the show off. Very poor taste. If you find yourself thinking that the U. The Amazing Race translated the lyrics so we would know what the song was saying.
Isn't that enough? Are you not able to form your own opinion about the song? Do you not credit your fellow Americans with enough intelligence to do the same? That was my reaction as well. It gave pause for thought and an opportunity to see another culture's perspective. No offense taken here, but kudos to CBS for apologizing for the unintentional pain, but not for the content of the program.
This is just annoying. The show wasn't disrespectful at all and CBS apologized. Its accepted-let it goooooooooooooo! Let us not forget, that the brave men who fought in Vietnam didn't have a choice, they were all but years old and fighting a war nobody wanted.
My hats are off the these brave Vets! Amazing Race and CBS have nothing to apologize for a show filmed in a country that we were once at war with. Americans can freely travel to Vietnam and see for themselves the site shown on the show. Nothing trivializing about a show about world travel and world cultures. Any veteran that complains about seeing his shot down plane on a TV show being used as a memorial from the perspective of the human beings that he was trying to kill, maim and defeat is a pathetic human being in the first place and should pipe down.
People just love to be outraged. The song might have been in poor taste a little, but the wreckage? Did they touch it, defile it in some way? It was included in footage. Now millions of people know about it who never would have otherwise.
Even a survivor of the mission didn't know about this memorial, and now he does. There is plenty to be genuinely outraged about folks. I like this show. It teaches important cultural lessons and ideas whether we agree with them or not. While some vet whining about this matter. I think it was the song And they sang it over and over again. I hope the Race won't go back there for awhile. It's humorous how Americans want to have freedom yet they cry and whine and tell other people how they should or shouldn't talk if they hear something they dislike.
Americans and their intolerance of disagreement is shameful yet they keep speaking as if they're the best country. Like I said, America is a great country in many ways, but also a shameful country in many ways. Take this show off the air.. If they can't respect vets from any country Then boot them off the air.. I wish someone would appologize to me.
I have a sinusy headache. I think it's the fault of germs maybe. Germs should say they are sorry. The Germans invented Germs. They made us have the cold and stuff. I think they should say they are sorry.
People are offended because.. Maybe Amazing Race should stop by Iraq and run some games in the infamous prison, to glorify our Army for invading.. Guess what.. The world is not a US Garden. This is part of Vietnam, what they endured. That's what they have and only an Imperialism an uneducated American would spit on other countries cultures.
You could only be offended if you want to live in a bubble. The show was what you would see and hear if you traveled there. Sorry news flash other countries do not have to like us.
As someone who grew up during that time although too young to serve I found nothing wrong with this episode. It was much to do about nothing. I knew several people who died in Vietnam. I found it very interesting watching it and seeing some of the way they live and the propaganda the government spews.
I spoke to my older brother, who did serve in Vietnam, and he had no problem with it either. I understand some might get upset, but there's much more important things in life to worry about. As John McCain said, case closed. I usually do not watch this show but decided to check it out the night this segment aired. I was appalled and offended by it and will waste no more time watching even though the apology was offered.
All of our country has the same history. Many families lost loved ones in that war as mine did. To have the odious song featured with the remains of the crashed plane was beyond belief. I do agree that some people ought to lose their jobs for being so ignorant and insensitive in including those scenes in the show.
Oh get over it. The U. I saw the show. The words to the song simply showed me how great my life truly is compared to those in many other countries.
People will find offence where they wish to see it. New Yorkers could be offended if a NYC destination didn't honor the victims. Idahoans could claim offence if a potato detour somehow stereotyped Idaho. An so on. Sometimes it is what it is and it just isn't about X, Y, or Z group. Not every entertainment moment needs to educate the masses. They should have apologized, it was terrible that they would do that. Extremely shameful. Glad they made the apology. It's funny how the American's who live in this "great" country, the land of the "free" well, only for some always seem to forget that our founding fathers stole this land from the American Indians.
Those "great" men were murderers, adulterers, rapists, robbers, etc. Is it because it was so long ago that once we forget over time it's not worth recognizing?
It's not our job to "rescue" other countries from governments we don't believe in. The vets should all be respected, period! But to silence a t. I'm a Native African American Indian. People shouldn't be taking our land and killing our water buffalo. I am Spotted Turtle. The last of our tribe. You need to re-learn U. Andrew Jackson and thereafter did the rest I am so glad that I have a place to voice my anger at the producers etc of this show.
I will no longer watch it or purchase products that advertise on it. There was no need to show the scene of the B52 or a song fest of communist people who are forced to live in that country. Me too. I'm never going to watch it again either. I've never seen it before anyhows. It sounds like a poooopy show. It bothers me when people aren't patriotic.
I lost both my shins in IwoJima so I have a hard time walking. We deserve respect for our sacrifices. We served so you can play Nintendo and listen to the WuTang Clan.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice; I too hate when people are disrespectful to you, you deserve much more. Of course all our veterans deserve respect. The lack of compassion was born of ignorance not malice and I think an apology for the mistake they made was sufficient as long as they do not repeat their transgressions.
Here is my problem with this show. I am sick and tired of my DVR recording this show instead of one of my favorites. This is a consistent and repeated problem for which they have never apologized and still have not corrected.
Please Keep the Amazing Race in its own time slot!!!!! Wow, I guess I didn't get near as much out of this show as others did! I love this show and it shows how other people in the world live and sometimes even do "service" projects while on the race. This show isn't meant to be a history lesson. I am so tired of always walking on eggshells because I am always afraid I am going to offend someone! It was a short segment on a great show. Get over it people. And, for those people who believe the world Vet refers to Veterinarians need to be given a serious history lesson!!
Vet in this subject is a Veteran, a former service member who has earned our respect! Get some brains. They are on later because of sports or something else running longer. It has nothing to do with the show. Just set your DVR to tape from Are you that inept?! How fraking stupid can you be to think that the show has anything to do with your DVR. I'm amazed you were able to spell DVR correctly. When I watched the part about the Socialism song I kind of laughed to myself.
I felt sorry for the people of Vietnam. Any Socialistic country needs our empathy. I guess I don't know anyone who vacations there. Do you desire to vacation there, much less, live there? Why is that? The people I know who travel to Vietnam are the Vietnamese who give me pedicures.
They moved here for the freedom the US offers. When discussing with them about their native country, they say they come to the US, save their money and bring their family members over to the US to live with them. They want to become US citizens. Am I upset that the song was shown on the Amazing Race? And that the US plane remains were shown? Let me just say I am not surprised, given who produces the show. I do think, though, that some uninformed US citizens might look at it and think the people of Vietnam are happy with socialism.
The Vietnamese I know are not happy with it. Brainwashing is a bad thing. My opinion is that this segment of the Amazing Race was a form of brainwashing; simply because it was one-sided. For those of you who thought we were on the wrong side in the Vietnam war, go back and read what happened once we pulled out. Millions were slaughtered by the Communists now Socialists. I think BrainWashing is agood thing. It's very important to have clean brains. I usually spray mine off with the water hose every few days.
They are sparkly clean. So do you feel sorry for the people of the United States living under a Socialist president? Or are you one of those Demo-rats who voted for him again? South Viet Nam then was a fascist, right-wing military dictatorship rich and the military controlled the country. The US, per usual, jumped in on the wrong side oh, what a surprise there They can tell their story any way they want to.
Just as we do. It was no disrespect of our military's valor, and none intended. I am a retired member of our armed forces and a Gulf War vet. I am also an avid fan of the show, who's hoping one day to be contestant with one wife or one of my daughters.
The Amazing Race is one of the most educational and inspiring shows on TV, as it has since it started. I was not offended by the Vietnam show scenes, but appreciate the gesture of the apology that they posted. Most of all, I am extremely grateful to all Vietnam vets for their sacrifice, and fully understand how these scenes could be construed and taken in bad taste. Thank you RicM - your comment is very likely the most sensible and reasonable on this board. The apology was accepted, so let's move on and enjoy the show, but still keep in mind the efforts and sacrifices of our vets including you, RicM - thanks.
CBS is one of Americas greedy corporations that is willing to tell whatever tale it believes will capture an audience and therefore make it the most money, even if the idea it is selling is socialism or communism. Nobody believes that every aspect of this show was not carefully scrutinized and run through a think tank. Kennedy got us into Vietnam to protect the French Colonial interests in Vietnam. It was a Republican in the end that got us out of Vietnam.
Our children deserve to be taught the truth. The presidential tapes recently unclassified from the time when Johnson was President revealed that he had all but come to an agreement to end the war. He had actually announced it, then it did not happen. They came to find out Nixon intervened in order to win the election.
Nixon undermined the whole deal and extended the war just to win the election. Johnson did not let this information out because it would so damage the faith and patriotism of the American people.
One wonders why when mentioning stats that could have been mentioned they failed to put in the to thousand Vietnamese civilians who died as a result of the United States sticking it's nose into the politcs of another country? And by nose I mean agent orange and machine guns.
Or how many of those vets were drafted to serve for a cause they didn't support who were themselves from poor families and sent over half way around the world to kill other poor people. I can see the wreckage of the bomber as insensitive.
Service men may have died in that plane. They shouldn't have done that. You can't whine about the Vietnamese singing nationlist songs. They're proud of their country, deal with it. How do you know they're proud of their country? It's a communist country. They have to sing that song whether they like it or not. We in America are so lucky to have so many rights and freedoms that we take it for granted.
In a communist country, you are not allowed to voice your opinion. If the government tells you to dance, you dance. If they tell you to si g, you better sing. When you make a mistake, you own up to it. We believe it to be sincere and heartfelt. To CBS, I say, 'apology accepted. Catch Up With Our Recap ].
Just like last week, fans of the series also took to social media to express their thoughts on the controversy, which ran the gamut from still pissed to apology accepted and moving on. I am desert storm vet and was very appalled that you made a leg around a crash site of our troops. Well done cbs on amazingrace apology to our veterans. Next time have a little foresight.
