Heavy, clunky-looking shoes, usually black, are one popular type of footwear, and old fashioned lace-up high top sneakers in black and white are another type that is commonly worn. Both boys and girls accent their emo clothing with makeup, particularly mascara, and they tend to apply it very liberally. An emo hairstyle is typically t dyed black and is cut so that it hangs down over at least one eye, and sometimes both.
Some of the hair may be clipped back with barrettes such as those designed for small children, and it is common for both boys and girls to use these. Other fashion touches are chains, black rubber bracelets, and heavy, black horn-rimmed glasses.

Part of being emo was knowing about bands no one else knew, so the more obscure the band, the more emo you seemed. T-shirts in general were definitely a staple in your wardrobe, especially if they were from Goodwill or had some random place or phrase or image on them that no one could figure out. So if you wore a particular color, you were admitting to conducting a particular act. Oh, teenagers. Emo kids loved their buttons. First and foremost, it is a slang term.
It has always been a slang term. Like any subculture, emo individuals have their own type of social behavior. An emo kid is typically sensitive and thoughtful as well as being quiet and introspective. They tend to keep to themselves and rarely interacts with anyone not a part of the emo scene.
No matter what their style of clothing or music is. Some emos are really depressed though , or the pretend to be. There are, I repeat exceptions to this, but I find most emo kids who cut their wrists need attention. Emo is still a thing , and those bands still exist.
